ODI LOST Podcast 74 - We Have to Go Back - Pilot Episode: Jack

Hey Everyone!
Hope you are all doing great?? So as promised we are back to do more LOST podcasts!

The whole team is back including myself, Vozzek aka Danny and of course fan favorite and Queen of LOST and rock star Karen!

So when we started chatting about what we should do for our new podcasts we threw several ideas around but one of the central themes was to look back at some of the earlier mysteries, subjects, episodes and more based on what we all now know or think we know. ;)

So we felt that we should start all the way back at Season 1 with the Pilot episode and then work our way through the seasons focusing on several topics, characters and mysteries. Not really going episode to episode in a traditional rewatch, but to tackle the major points. So it will vary with each podcast until we find some sort of set formula. Of course if you guys have thoughts, questions, ideas or topics you want us to cover we are an open book and this is your opportunity to hear our thoughts.

These new podcasts might not be as long as our traditional recap podcasts, but we are still having a bunch of fun and talking about crazy ideas. Also, we will do our best to keep it real and relate it to how the show ended.

So enough of my thoughts, we all are really excited to be doing this again and we look forward to trying to give you all some podcasts on a regular basis. I doubt it will be weekly, but maybe every couple of weeks or so. Make sure you let all of your Lostie friends know we are back and that they should subscribe again if they unsubscribed.

This new podcast was posted on iTunes last night and it already has several hundred downloads so I appreciate all of you staying loyal to LOST and our podcast. If you can not access iTunes here is an audio player with a download link.

Enjoy!!

NOTE: For those wondering why I changed the player to the new blue color scheme, well I am hosting the new SpoilerTV podcast where we cover several other shows and movies, but that is the color scheme there. Just FYI, Danny and Karen did join me a couple of weeks ago to chat about Game of Thrones and Fringe. So if you are into those shows, head over to SpoilerTV.com and find that podcast there!

LOST Pilot Episode to Air Day Before Series Finale

Just when you thought 5 hours were too many for the finale event on Sunday, ABC has confirmed we will get TWO more hours of LOST, but the night before the finale on Saturday May 22nd at 8PM.

ABC is planning a "Lost" weekend: The network has just scheduled a repeat showing of the show's two-hour 2004 pilot for the night before its finale.

The J.J. Abrams-directed, $10 million-plus spectacular will air Saturday, May 22, from 8-10 p.m., ABC told affiliates today. The two-hour finale will air the following evening from 9-11 p.m.

This brings the total number of "Lost" hours ABC is planning for the week of May 17 to 10. There's the penultimate episode of May 18; the pilot encore on May 22; a two-hour pre-show/recap on May 23; the finale itself; and "Jimmy Kimmel: After the Final Rose" (also on May 23).

The last time ABC aired the "Lost" pilot, by the way, was back in February 2006. It also got repeated in 2004 and 2005.

Almost spot on for some of the stuff, but you can see the subtle changes as well.

Carlton Cuse Explains Origins of LOST

Hey All,
Here is a cool explanation from LOST Co-Creator and writer Carlton Cuse talking about their initial plan for LOST was 12 episodes until they realized the pilot was a hit and started writing out the full mythology that it would take about 100 episodes.

Thanks to back_gammon for the summary of the interview:

Carlton Cuse: The thing that made LOST popular was the fact that no one thought LOST was going to succeed at all. When the show first started, the idea for LOST came from an executive at abc network, Los Angeles, and he wanted to do a sort of scripted version of Survivor, and hired some writers to do that and --- he was basically --- he knew he was going to lose his job and he put a lot of money into making the pilot of the show.

And then, he did lose his job and so abc had this very expensive pilot --- which they --- they thought the pilot was good but they didn't think it would work as a series.

So my partner, Damon Lindeloff, and I, who run the show, we basically thought that we were going to make 12 episodes of the show and that was it. And so we decided we were going to make the 12 best episodes that we could ever make for ourselves --- the ones we would enjoy the most, and that is what we set out to do.

And in doing so we broke a lot of the conventional rules of television, particularly for American television shows. We had a large cast. Normally a cast in an American television show might be 6,7, or 8 actors. We had 15 series regulars. We had very complex storylines. We had purposely ambiguous stories where the audience had to determine what they thought a given scene meant. And we also made the show heavily serialized; it required you to watch it deeply. And we embedded clues in the show. And we also had main characters who were bad people, like murderers, had murdered people, and none of these things were really things you were supposed to be able to do on a show.

We sort of saw as our model a show called "The Prisoner," a British show made in like the 1960's, and it was 18 episodes and then it was over, but people still remember it, so we said "We're going to make the 12 best episodes that anyone will ever --- it's going to be the best 12 episode show ever."

And then they aired the pilot and the ratings came back, and normally that's like winning the lottery. And I remember when Damon, my partner, came into my office and he had the ratings sheet and he was like "OMG, we're going to have to keep doing this!" (Cuse chuckles)

And that's when we sat down and started trying to figure out all the mythology for the show, and it was only then that we realized it wasn't going to be 12 episodes, it was going to be 100 episodes, at least, and that we had to really plan and plot out what the story was going to be. And so that's when we really figured out all of the mythology of LOST.
