ODI LOSTcast 59 - Episode 6x09 Recap and Theories

Hey All,
What a crazy and fun week! This week's Episode 6x09 Ab Aeterno was filled with all sorts of awesomeness!

Of course some of you know after last week's episode I had a moment to chat with Damon Lindelof and in that podcast I mentioned we had scheduled EW's Jeff Jensen again. However, because of some technical recording issues we had to reschedule and if all works out ok, he will join us later this week.

However, we were still able to get a guest to join us and it was fellow LOST blogger Jo from Jopionionated. Jo not only has her own blog, but also announced just today she is now officially writing for AOL TV! So congratulations to her!

Jo joined us for the first time and learned very quickly about some of the crazy thoughts and theories we have on the podcast. We did chat with her about her experiences writing about LOST, visiting the set of Fringe and V and of course we all recapped the wonderful moments in Ab Aeterno, such as Richard's crazy laugh, his love Isabella, the interaction of Richard with both the MiB and Jacob, the reveals of the Black Rock smashing into the 4-Toed Foot and much more!

We also seemed to really get stuck on the possibility that Jacob and MiB are one in the same person and perhaps have a split personality. Think we are crazy?? Well listen to the podcast to find out HOW crazy!

This podcast was posted to iTunes earlier, but below is an audio player and download link for you all to enjoy!

Episode 6x09 -- Don't Get Lost in Heaven (Ab Aeterno) -- By Anna

I do sincerely apologize to you all for my recent 3-episode hiatus. I suppose one could say that I’ve been saving my thoughts on the last few episodes and letting them age like…a fine wine. Yet even with so many current distractions (read: very important life-stuff) nothing gets me “stay-up-all-night-whacky-LOST-eyed-writing” again more than a major mythology episode.

INTRO: Rock It

So, did LOST not ROCK IT with episode nine or what?!

Nestor Carbonell finally got to show off his mad acting skillz is this long-overdue tale of Richard Alpert’s epic back-story, “Ab Aeterno” (which for those of you who don’t know already can be translated to “For Eternity”). And it really did have something for everyone. A dashing hero on horseback straight out of a period romance-novel. A damsel in distress. Bloody outbursts of violence. The battle between good and evil. Faustian bargains. Richard's hysterical laughter. Built-in suspenders! Corks!!

When compared to the rest of the series, it was as emotional as “The Constant”, as mythical as “Cabin Fever”, as shocking as “The Man Behind the Curtain”…and I could go on and on through all of the major game-changing episodes we have seen. Just through following the fan rumblings on Twitter I found that there are only a few who have NOT added this to their “top-episodes of all time” lists. I believe this is true especially because of the fact we had previously been given NOTHING about this character’s tale but little spurts and hints since his first appearance. This in turn made the fan buildup to this particular installment nothing short of phenomenal, dare I say even rabid. And I must concur; it met and surpassed my expectations as it seems to have done for most of the fan-base.

There’s some heady stuff going on in this one so let’s just get right to the recap!

LOST Series Finale Commercial Costs Advertisers Almost $1M

Slot in Last Episode Priced Just Under That of Oscar Berth and at 400% Markup to 30-Second Spot Sold in Upfront

So much for "Keep it simple, stupid." ABC's "Lost" may have shed millions of viewers as the show grew increasingly complex, but the remaining fans are so intense that marketers are spending big to appear in the program's on-air farewell. The cost of a 30-second ad in the final episode of the series is coming in around a whopping $900,000, according to media buyers.

Buyers suggest ABC has been seeking between $850,000 and $950,000 for an ad berth. ABC executives declined to comment.

During last year's upfront, a 30-second spot for "Lost" was selling for an average of $213,563, according to Advertising Age's annual survey of ad costs in prime-time broadcast shows. At $900,000 a spot, ABC is clearing a markup north of 400% from advertisers who didn't reserve their time in the show last year.

The series finale of "Lost" is slated to air as part of a three-hour block on Sunday, May 23. The 8 p.m. hour of the evening will be devoted to a recap of the mysterious show and the last episode will run from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The hefty cost -- the price is just $400,000 to $600,000 less than the cost of a 30-second spot in this year's Oscars broadcast -- further illustrates the interest advertisers have in so-called event programming. With audiences increasingly watching TV programs at times of their own choosing and through nontraditional methods such as DVR playback, assembling a large crowd has become a much tougher task.

And yet, many advertisers need to reach millions of people to make their cash registers ring. With ratings for such "must-watch" events as ABC's Oscars broadcast and CBS's recent Super Bowl telecast continuing to bring in larger-than-usual audiences, marketers seem willing to pay a higher-than-normal sum to advertise, given today's fractured media landscape.

Unusual success
"There are many advertisers willing to pay a reasonable premium for inventory in programs that generate such a highly passionate and rabid fan base," said Kris Magel, exec VP-director, national broadcast at Interpublic Group of Cos.' Initiative, who could not comment on ad prices in the "Lost" finale. "There is definitely value in that."

"Lost" is unusual in its success. The six-season drama centers on a group of people seemingly marooned on an island, only to find themselves caught in the middle of a battle between forces they don't quite understand. Such complexity is often not welcomed by audiences who seek programs they can watch one week but skip the next, and any number of "Lost" knockoffs -- "The Nine," "Vanished," "Kidnapped" -- have fallen by the wayside in recent seasons. ABC also once had high hopes for this season's "Flash Forward," in which FBI agents try to solve a mysterious event, but ratings for the program have steadily declined.

Finale finances
'MASH' (1983)
A 30-second spot in the finale of the CBS show goes for about $450,000.

'SEINFELD' (1998)
Thirty-second spots go for between $1.4 MILLION and $1.8 MILLION.

'FRIENDS' (2004)
A 30-second spot costs between $1.5 MILLION and $2.3 MILLION.

'EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND' (2005)
A 30-second ad goes for about $1.3 MILLION.

'TODAY' (2006)
The cost of a 30-second ad in Katie Couric's last "Today" goes for around $110,000, more than double the normal rate.

Yet those viewers who hang on for the ride these programs offer are particularly devoted, and advertisers often hope to win over crowds with an unusual amount of interest in a particular show. Last week, "Lost" snared nearly 8.8 million viewers, according to Nielsen, second only to Fox's airing of "American Idol" on Tuesday evening.

The show "is different, and people talk about it, and it's not just some sitcom coming to an end," said Ira Berger, director-network broadcasting at independent agency Richards Group, who said he has no client in the program. "It's very much an event."

At $900,000, a spot on the last episode of "Lost" would cost more than any of the 10 most-expensive programs on TV for advertisers, according to Ad Age's survey of prices paid in last year's upfront. The costliest program for the 2009-2010 TV season was NBC's "Sunday Night Football," where a 30-second spot cost an average of $339,700.

Episode 6x09 - ODI LOSTometer Episode Grade Chart

Hey All,
I know a few of you did not think this past week's episode of LOST was as good as others thought, but you were in a big minority as most fans felt that it was amazing and one of the better episodes we have seen.

The fan polls ranked this episode very high and just slightly below the The Constant making it the second highest ranked episode.

The blogger/media sites agreed with the majority as several of them gave A++++!

As always the additional "+" symbols are to show how they really felt but only count for one "+".

What more can I say, I loved seeing Richard's flashback, Nestor Carbonell's acting was awesome and and any Jacob and MiB interaction is always a plus. Of course the writers gave us several answers including killing two birds with one Black Rock, explaining how the ship got to the center of the island and what destroyed the 4-toed statue.

Quote of the Week via Anna (FourToedFoot.com): Can I do A to the 15th power? It was as emotional as the Constant, as mythical as Cabin Fever, as shocking as The Man Behind the Curtain…I could go on through all of the BIG episodes we have of the series. There are not many who seem to have NOT added this to their “top-episodes of all times” lists. Especially when we have been given NOTHING about this character but little spurts and hints…the fan buildup was phenomenal and I have to agree it met and surpassed my expectations.

Honorable Mention - Best Use of the Letter "A": 'A' is for Admirable Amazing Astonishing Awesome Ab Aeterno Alpert.

ODI LOSTcast 58 - Interview with Damon Lindelof

Hey All,
Earlier today I had a chance to chat with LOST co-writer/producer Damon Lindelof. They just finished writing the script for the finale over the weekend and he was kind enough to chat with me during his busy morning schedule for a few moments. I had a great time doing the interview with him he was candid and honest in answering ALMOST everything I asked him.

We talked about the journey of getting to the finale and if it is the story they wanted to tell, what they would maybe like to change or do different, if we will see Eko again, the fan reactions to Season 5 (time travel) and Season 6 (Flash-Sideways), what made Ab Aeterno so good, and then I asked him a few of the fan questions that were sent in. He also has a special message to spoiler fans about the finale at the end of the podcast.

I want to thank each and everyone of you for submitting so many great questions. I wish I had more time with Damon to ask them all, but my time with him was very limited and he could not reveal anything spoilery.

NOTE: At about the 19 Minute mark when talking about what the plans are for LOST after the finale he does mention the finale title (which was revealed yesterday). So for those of you that consider this a spoiler beware. HOWEVER, I can almost guarantee the title spoils nothing, but for those that are sensitive to such things I wanted to give you a little warning.

I hope you all enjoy listening and once again thanks to all that help set it up and of course Damon.

UPDATE: The interview is NOW posted at the following link:

http://the-odi.blogspot.com/2010/03/odi-lostcast-58-interview-with-damon.html

UPDATE: Thanks for ALL the great questions, I just completed my chat with Damon and it went really well.

Unfortunately he was short on time and could not answer too many questions, but what he did answer he answered well. I will get the audio up soon!

Hey All,
We are half way through Season 6 and you most likely watched the Richard-Centric Ab Aeterno and were blown away by not only Nestor Carbonell's acting, but also the reveals about the Black Rock, Jacob, MiB and more!

However, you still have questions and feel LOST. So is there one question you always wanted to ask one of the LOST writers? Something about last night's episode? Season 6 or the show in general??

Well tomorrow Damon Lindelof will join me for a Q&A session for The ODI Podcast!

He of course will not answer anything too spoilery if at all, but if you have a question please leave a comment below or use the "Submit a Scoop" button above.

Please keep in mind Damon is busy, that I have limited time with him and I am sure several questions will be submitted. So to be fair please limit yourselves to one question only. I will NOT be able to ask every question but will do my best to ask as many good questions as possible.

The more simple and popular a question is, the more likely I will ask him and that you will get an answer. So submit away.

Thanks in advance and I can't wait to do this!

ODI LOSTcast 57 - Episode 6x08 Recon Recap

Hey All,
With most of you on the east coast or across the world now getting ready for tonight's episode 6x09, I am sure that the recap of last week's episode is not on the top of your list of things to listen to.

However, this week as always Karen, Danny and myself analyze the off and on island fun. We chat about some of things we did not like and how some stuff did not seem to fit, but there were several important scenes we chatted about including Sawyer smashing the mirror, Little House on the Prairie, Sawyer setting up a con of Widmore and MiB and of course MiB talking to Kate about having a crazy mom and much more!

Plus I make an announcement of who our special guests will be this week!

If you are on the west coast or will not be watching the live feed, check out the recap podcast below!
