ODI LOSTcast 68 - Episode 6x14 The Candidate Recap

Hey All,
I know we are only hours away from the next episode of LOST, but last week's episode had several action packed emotional and intense scenes! The flash sideways moments were also very important and we discuss each one to provide you our thoughts.

The MiB almost pulled off the long con killing all of the candidates, but Sayid's sacrifice helped a few of them survive and is there still any possibility or reason why he is killing our Losties and it is ok?

Well the podcast for some reason took forever to transcode today, but maybe because it is super-sized! Well it is finally up on iTunes or you can use the audio player and download link below!

Terry O' Quinn Discuss Playing the Smoke Monster with EW

Terry O' Quinn Discuss Playing the Smoke Monster with EW

EW: Any hints you can provide about where we’re headed in the next chunk of episodes?

TO: My guy—Smokey, as I call him—has a plan and he has an objective, and he’s working toward it. The question is, ‘Is it for his own good or for the good of everyone?’ That’s still up for debate.

EW: The Man in Black/Locke/Smokey revelation was a major advancement of the Lost mythology. How did you feel about that twist?

TO: I thought it was one of the biggest leaps that people were going to have to take, in terms of suspension of disbelief. Like, “Okay. All right then.” But they’d already been set up because you knew Christian, Jack’s dad, was walking around and things like that. Somebody said, “Did Lost jump the shark?” and I said, “Either they always have or they didn’t.” You know? It’s just one more giant leap. People seem to have taken it in stride. I was afraid that it might be asking too much of an audience to accept that, but everybody seems to be dealing with it all right, so I’m real happy with that.

EW: Is it an honor to be the Smoke Monster?

TO: Oh, yeah. It’s fun to play. I mean, it’s just totally different from whatever John Locke was. Bad guys have better secrets. And if he’s a bad guy, he’s got a lot of secrets. And that’s what frustrates people. When [Sawyer] says, “What are you?” and Smokey says, “What I am is trapped,” okay—you don’t pursue that question. Everybody else will go, “Well, what the hell does that mean? Who are you? Come on, man!” But we’re going to have to wait until another week to find that out.

EW: How did you go about playing this new character? It seems like a tricky needle to thread—as you’ve said, it’s “hard not to load things up, become arch.”

TO: Well, it is. Not because of any instruction, I chose to…. In the scene, for example, right after I told Ben I was Smokey – “I’m sorry you saw me like that”— occasionally there’s residual Locke emotions or feelings that Smokey gets that may surprise him, may irritate him, that he can’t completely control, so he’ll be smug or make fun of John Locke. Or say he was a loser and he was pathetic and he was broken. But for my own edification, I keep a little spark of John Locke alive in this being, whatever he is… so that if for any reason, anybody wants to summon that spark, it’s there. And I think sometimes Smokey’s indifference is my choice. Smokey’s puzzled by it: What is this persona he’s inhabited? Maybe it’s stronger than he thought it was. But that just gives me things to play in the scene, gives a little bit of color to a scene. And I enjoy it. He was moved when he told Ben that John Locke’s last thought was, “I don’t understand.” And he was surprised to be moved.

EW: In last week’s episode, Ilana said that Smokey is “recruiting,” and we saw him go after Richard Alpert and Sawyer. Is his first order of business to recruit all of the castaways?

TO: We’re doing an episode now called --------------- He has a purpose. As you know, all of a sudden, they’re establishing all these rules. “You can’t do this unless this…” It’s like a children’s game. We keep making up new rules [laughs]. So the recruiting has to do with fulfilling the rules.

EW: What feedback are you getting from fans?

TO: People tell me they like Bad Locke: “I like the new dark guy.” And I say, “Well, that’s good. I’m having fun playing him. I don’t know if you’re going to like him when it’s all over, but as long as you’re liking watching.” It’s amazing to me—what is this love affair we have with bad guys? With the bad boy in high school, with the anti-hero, et cetera, et cetera? Because I was always just a very nice boy. I didn’t get it.

Episode 6x04 The Substitute - ODI LOSTometer Episode Grade

Hey All,
Looks like the Candidate Cave and getting some answers along with new questions in the Locke-Centric The Substitute was received very well by most of the graders.

The final average grade provided us with our first "A" rated episode of the season!

Since last week we have been getting quite a bit of positive feedback from the community and have decided to make this a weekly thing as long as all of the folk participating want to continue to provide us with grades.

Several new sites have been added to the chart and next week we might add some more. The new grades for Episode 6x03 What Kate Does pushed the grade up one notch from C+ to a B- while the premiere stayed at an A-.

Besides the Candidate Cave, one of my favorite scenes took place off island when Locke meets Ben as a teacher. I couldn't stop laughing. Just loved it. BTW, Terry O' Quinn and Josh Holloway are acting their A$$s off!

Quote of the Week:
"You give me a John Locke episode and I'm a happy person"

So please discuss and comment below if you agree with the ratings.

Thanks once again to all that have participated. Don't forget to check out their recaps and sites via the following links:

Episode 6x04 The Substitute - Screencaps of the Numbers and Names

UPDATE: Here is what LOSTpedia has listed for names:

Update: Besides the main 6 Candidates who else do you see? Yes some are very familiar.

Some of the other names that have been found so far are: Littleton, Pace, O' Toole, Goodspeed, Domingo, Burke, Troup, Lewis, Faraday, Cunningham, Mattingley, Sullivan, Grant, Jones

Episode 6x04 The Substitute - Screencaps of the Numbers and Names

Finally we see the connection of the number to our Losties, but why does Kate not have a number? Any thoughts or theories? Also my guess is that Jin is the "Kwon" that is referenced but then why all the men?

So like Frank our Losties are candidates to protect the island.

POLL: Episode 6x04 The Substitute - What Did You Think!?

#LOST - Terry O' Quinn Discusses Locke v Smocke

Confession: We have been fascinated with John Locke since he smiled at Kate with that orange in his mouth. Something about the bald-headed guy struck us as simultaneously warm and menacing.

Over the years, we've spoken to the "Lost" producers and the Emmy-winning Terry O'Quinn several times about the journey of John Locke, who until last week's premiere had maintained a bad-ass good-guy status on the island.

Now, we know that Locke ain't Locke. Our Locke is dead and the Locke imposter running things is still smokey cool, but who is he and what does he want? Do we trust that Smocke just wants "to go home?" Even O'Quinn believed that Locke had been resurrected last season, so now what?

We've done our own time traveling back to 2007 when we interviewed executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse and O'Quinn about the significance of John Locke as it relates to the island's mysteries.

For example, we asked: when Locke "looked into the eye of the island" and what he saw was "beautiful," what did he mean?

Lindelof: "That he’s been secretly sleeping with the monster all this time and that they have little smoke babies."

Knowing what we know now, should we take that literally? Should we scream, "A-ha!"

On that note, do you remember when the smoke monster wasn't Locke and it killed Eko? O'Quinn admitted then that the "polar bear business and the special effects" were not his thing. "I'm not a big fan of fighting special effects with hair spray and a lighter," he said at the time.

Fast forward to 2010, or whatever the date is on The Island, and the man who plays Smocke has changed his tune.

"I notice that the effects are much better now that it's me," he half-joked on set last week in Oahu. "... It's a little tougher this year because now I know that I'm some sort of other worldly inhuman thing where as last year I didn't know it, so it was easier to play."

Will Smocke alter Locke's status as a fan favorite?

"I don't know if you'll have a great deal of affection for him," O'Quinn said. "I think the character is as interesting as ever, but he's different. I'm playing somebody different. Although this different person has occupied the persona of John Locke, I think the character -- if I do it justice -- should be riveting."

As long as Smocke says things like, "I'm sorry you had to see me that way," we're in.

Episode 6x02 - Jack's Business Card with LOST Numbers in Address

Episode 6x02 LA X - Jack's Business Card with LOST Numbers in Address

When Jack hands his business card to Locke towards the end of the premiere it seems too obvious that this exchange is more than just a good gesture by the good ole' doc.

I have a weird feeling if this ALT timeline is extended out that MAYBE Jack will actually heal Locke?

Well we will have to wait and see what happens, but in the meantime check out the address on Jack's Card!

8444 Wilshire Blvd.

Of course the 8 and 4 standout as two of the LOST numbers! However, I decided to see if it was a real address here in LA and it is! Of course it could mean nothing, BUT it is a Medical Center! That is near a street near Gale Dr.. Yes I know a nice stretch to Henry Gale? Also when you use Google to look up the address look at the actual location it pulls up!

"Gale Group"

BTW, checking out the street view gives you a glimpse of the building and if you look to the left of the image, the day the Google Map Image was taken, seems like filming was taking place. Too weird and yes all in good fun.

Click Here for Google Map of 8444 Wilshire Drive

LOST V Predators!!

Hey All,
Apparently the new Predators movie (yes another sequel/reboot) will soon be filming in Hawaii and the MTV Movies blog put together a funny list with odds of some of the LOST Characters and how they might fare if they met face to face with a Predator.

Here is the list...enjoy!!

Jack Shephard:
The former alcoholic and pill-popping doctor is the de facto leader of the Oceanic 815 survivors, and despite his necessity-driven experience with firearms, what kind of threat would Jack really pose against a Predator? He's no match physically, but his ability to perform surgery in a pinch might render him useful enough to leave alive until the rest of the castaways are picked off.

Survival Odds: 12:1. If Jack can tap into some of that Arnold Schwarzenegger man-thrives-in-nature instinct, he might stand a chance.

Benjamin Linus:
As the leader of the Island's mysterious Others, Ben has a proven talent for deception. When it comes to facing down the barrel of a shoulder-mounted laser cannon though, that smart mouth will do him no favors. The bug-eyed twerp's best chance against the Predators is to trick everybody else into drawing fire while looking for a way to stay alive -- just as he's done all of his life.

Survival Odds: 200:1. Ben's only real weapon here is his manipulative ways, and when he runs out of bodies to trick into harm's way, it's game over for Captain Bunny Killer.

Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes:
If there's one definitive fact about the laidback, oversized millionaire, it's that he's supremely unlucky. Still, Hurley's bad luck tends to rub off on those that surround him rather than Hurley himself, meaning that he could beat the Predators by pure happenstance. He's also unlikely to be viewed as a major threat, putting him towards the back of the hunting list -- but as he's proven before, Hurley is pretty spry and shouldn't be discounted on looks alone.
Survival Odds: 1000:1. Aw, Hurley... I want you to eek this out, but I don't think that even the unlucky lotto numbers will protect you from a triangular laser blast.

John Locke:
Nobody gets to tell John Locke what he can and can't do, least of all a Predator. The man of a thousand knives has an instinctual knowledge of the Island's layouts that's second to none, giving him the home field advantage. And even if he finds himself on the business end of a two-pronged claw, Locke has a tested gift for beating death and injury.
Survival Odds: 5:1. Moreso than Jack, Locke has what it takes to evoke some of the primal rage required to take down a Predator. After all, he is a hunter -- not a farmer.

The Smoke Monster:
A massive puff of smoke identified as the Island's security system -- a creature that appears to be physically intangible but can nonetheless eviscerate a pack of highly-trained mercenaries in one fell swoop -- versus an alien with laser discs, stealth camouflage and other technological goodies. It's a tough one, but I'd go with Smokey. Don't feel too bad: Predators appreciate a good sport, and if nothing else, the resident monster presents the greatest challenge out of all the Island's inhabitants.
Survival Odds: 2:1. Yes, it's a tough call, but I really think Smokey McSmokesalot has this on lockdown. It might take some time to pull off, but unless the Predators can escape the island, they're a green puddle of goo.

LOST SDCC09 Panel Opening Reveals Season 6 Banner

From DarkUFO: Update: 28th July 19:50 I've been told by one of my ABC contacts that the names are as follows.

Faraday, Boone, Miles, Michael, Ana Lucia, Charlotte, Shannon, Desmond, Eko, Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Locke, Ben, Sayid, Libby, Sun, Jin, Claire, Hurley, Juliet, Charlie, Frank, Richard, Bernard and Rose

(No Walt huh!?)

**UPDATED** 7/28 10AM PST Thanks to our friends at DarkUFO for the breakdown of the banner with all the cast names. Any corrections?

LOST San Diego Comic Con 09 Panel Opening

Here is the opening reveal of The Final Season (Season 6) Banner with the characters being revealed. You can clearly see Boone and Shannon appear and the last person is Locke facing backwards.

Locke facing backwards could be a reference to Locke coming back or Darth Locke, but what do you all think?

Four-Toed Staue Confirmed as Tawaret by ABC

Hey All,
I was reading Jeff Jensen's most recent post at EW and in his post he had a link to the official ABC recap for the Season 5 Finale The Incident, that states the Four-Toed Statue is indeed the Goddess Tawaret.

I am not sure how long this recap has been available and this information was available, but it is the first time I have seen it.

So for all of you that were claiming the statue was Tawaret, I guess you are right.

What does this all mean!?

Tawaret is known as the goddess of pregnancy and childbirth, which of course could be a reference to the pregnancy issues on the island.

Also, if we think back to season three when Richard tells Locke that Ben is wasting the Others time with "novelties" such as the pregnancy issues and then hands Locke Sawyer's file. He basically "pushes" Locke towards convincing Sawyer to kill Locke's father Cooper.

So if Jacob lives in the statue and Richard seems to be working for Jacob then why do they convince or influence Locke to have Sawyer get redemption via a revenge killing!? Especially if we are led to believe that Jacob seems to be a force for good?? Maybe Jacob is not who we think he might be!?

I don't know, perhaps I am missing something!? What do you all think!?

Here is a link to Wikipedia's entry on Tawaret
